Dog Day

Oh, it's a beautiful day today, isn't it? After all those cold temperatures, followed by cold wind, followed by snow, for heaven's sakes, my heart is lightened to think that maybe--just maybe--spring really has arrived! (For the second, third, or maybe even fourth time this year, of course.) I know that this annoying teeter-totter of meteorological surprises really is spring, I just don't like it. It's fickle and unpredictable and clearly the product of a dysfunctional upbringing. And contrary to all common sense, I'm surprised by it every year.

I love warm weather with all my heart, I do. I truly feel like Persephone when the dark days of winter lift, as if I've been returned to my true home and my real life, and it is possible to be me again. So, in celebration of the emergence of warmth--again--I have decided to blow off all must-do's today. Forget those evaluation reports that should be done. Never mind planning for my week so I'll know What The Hell To Do With The Children. Screw cleaning! It's all secondary to the pleasure of taking a walk, sitting on my lanai, and forcing the Bugster to go outside with me and sit in the green, green grass. This is what life is.

Earlier I walked to the park for my Sunday morning church; I had planned to do some writing there, but God made me forget my pen. Instead I sat on a bench and got lost in watching dogs play. I think dogs are pure of spirit--even Jack, the black lab, who wouldn't share the ball--and that is what God wanted me to see. He also wanted me to see how to be a good friend by showing me Chloe, Jack's friend, who "accidentally" dropped the ball every time she got it first so that Jack could have a chance to play, too. And because He wanted me to see how to live life with enthusiasm, he showed me Sandia, who took off at full speed from across the field every time his person called him. It was all just so...right.

Today I celebrate spring with you, for however long it lasts! I hope there's something you can blow off so that you can sit outside in your sandals and let the sun warm your toes. No matter how good you're already feeling, you'll feel better.
